Accepted Solution

A:
lets start this by seeing what Rose has done:
first she borrows $5, then she borrows another $11. she then pays back $3.50 of the $5 and $9.50 of the $11.
knowing this, we can use a number line to help solve this problem. first, we would make a mark at 5 on your number line, then go up the number line 11 more times until you reach 16. once youre at 16, you need to jump backwards down the number line 3 1/2 spots. this would leave you at 13 1/2, which would leave a dot halfway in between 13 and 14. now, you need to back 9 1/2 more spots so you can see how much she owes to her brother and father. if youre at 13 1/2 on your number line, and go back, or subtract, 9 1/2 spots you end up 4. this means that Rose owes $4 still. if you do not understand this process, i will include a picture below of my number line and you can follow along to the steps written above on the number line.
