Add. Show Your Work. 1  4/5 + 1  6/10Subtract. Show Your Work.2  3/4  - 1  2/8

Accepted Solution

A:
Hey there :)

[tex]1 \frac{4}{5} + 1\frac{6}{10} [/tex]

Change mixed fraction into an improper fraction
[tex] \frac{9}{5} + \frac{16}{10} [/tex]
[tex] \frac{16}{10} [/tex] : are both even numbers, so you can further simplify by dividing by 2
[tex] \frac{16/2}{10/2} = \frac{8}{5} [/tex]

To add fractions, we need same denominator to proceed. Here we have no problem since both denominators are 5

[tex] \frac{9}{5}+ \frac{8}{5} = \frac{9+8}{5} [/tex]
[tex] \frac{17}{5} [/tex]

As a mixed fraction: [tex]3 \frac{2}{5} [/tex]
______________________________________________________

[tex]2 \frac{3}{4} - 1\frac{2}{8} [/tex]

Let us change the mixed fraction into an improper fraction:
[tex] \frac{11}{4} - \frac{10}{8} [/tex]
[tex] \frac{10}{8} [/tex] : You can further simplify this since both are divisible by 2
[tex] \frac{10/2}{8/2} = \frac{5}{4} [/tex]

We have the same denominator set for subtraction, so you do not have to find common denominators
[tex] \frac{11}{4}- \frac{5}{4} = \frac{11-5}{4} [/tex]
[tex] \frac{6}{4} [/tex]

As a mixed fraction: [tex] 1\frac{2}{4} = 1\frac{1}{2} [/tex]
